Check-Ups
Regular dental check-ups are a great way to keep your mouth healthy and check for any signs of dental disease before they become a problem. We generally recommend 6 monthly check-ups.
What happens at a check-up?
The first step is talking to your dentist about your oral and general health. Some medical conditions, and some medications, can change the way we diagnose and treat dental issues.
Next, we’ll perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth. We’ll be checking for things like cavities, gum health, and general oral health.
Depending how long it has been since your last professional clean, we will often recommend this as a next step.
Digital x-rays may be required if there are indications of decay, or areas that we can’t easily check.
A number of issues can be addressed at a check-up, including:
- Decay – treating a small area of tooth decay is a lot easier and less uncomfortable than treating a larger area of decay.
- Wisdom Teeth – A wisdom teeth assessment can help improve outcomes.
- Tooth Wear - Your dentist can detect teeth wear due to grinding or clenching and can recommend a night guard if necessary.
- Orthodontics - Early identification of orthodontic problems can help improve outcomes.
Your dentist may refer you for an OPG (full mouth x-ray) which give an overall view of your whole mouth, jaw and sinuses – they are helpful to assess bone heights throughout your jaw, check for positioning of wisdom teeth or any other pathology.
